Actor-politician Kamal Haasan has been vocal in his opposition to the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), describing its implementation as a move that attempts to divide the country and disrupt social harmony. In a statement, Haasan accused the BJP-led central government of hastily notifying the CAA rules ahead of the Lok Sabha elections in a desperate bid to win the polls. He criticized the timing of the notification, especially as the Supreme Court is still determining the law’s constitutional validity.
He pointed out that Tamil Nadu has led other states in passing resolutions against the Act in the state legislature.
On the first day of Ramzan, Haasan released a statement, saying, “The central government is trying to divide the public and destroy the harmony of India, right before the election. In its desperation to win the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the BJP government has hurriedly notified the CAA, on the eve of the elections. The timing of the notification is furthermore questionable, considering the Supreme Court is determining the constitutional validity of this law.”
He further added, “If we believe the claims that this Act is meant to protect the oppressed religious minorities, why not include the Sri Lankan Tamils who have faced similar hardships? Tamil Nadu, leading the way among other states, has passed resolutions in the state legislature against this Act. To add insult to injury, after having been ignored and overlooked by the central government, now our Muslim brothers received this tragic news on one of their holiest of days.”
Haasan’s Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) has unwaveringly opposed the CAA and was among the first to challenge the law in the Supreme Court. He declared, “Unfortunately, this Act, which was hastily tabled and is now being implemented on the eve of a national election, makes plain BJP’s nefarious designs.”
In a tweet, Haasan stated, “A dark day for India. A religion-based citizenship test is antithetical to the secular constitutional foundations of the republic, and I will fight against this legally and politically with all my might.”
