Malayalam Film Release and the OTT Window Controversy
The Malayalam film industry is currently embroiled in a controversy over the release of films on Over-the-Top (OTT) platforms. The Film Exhibitors United Organisation of Kerala (FEUOK) has announced that it will not screen any new Malayalam films in theaters from February 22. This decision was made in response to film producers continuing to violate the designated OTT window-period.
The OTT Window Controversy
The OTT window-period is a designated time frame agreed upon by film producers and theater owners, which mandates a 42-day gap between the theater and OTT releases. However, FEUOK claims that film producers are releasing movies on OTT platforms much earlier, prompting it to take the drastic step of stopping the screening of new movies.
The Response from Producers and Distributors
In response to FEUOK’s announcement, the Kerala Film Producers’ Association and Film Distributors’ Association have jointly declared that they will not cooperate with theaters that do not screen the films as scheduled. They insist that newly-opened theaters must obtain content (digital prints) provided by their platform, forcing exhibitors to buy projectors that will suit the content provided by the Producers’ Association.
Impact on Upcoming Releases
While films like Rahul Sadasivan’s Mammootty-starrer Bramayugam and Girish AD’s Naslen and Mamitha Baiju-starrer Premalu won’t be affected by the situation, the highly anticipated Manjummel Boys might be caught in the turmoil.
This ongoing controversy has raised several questions about the future of the Malayalam film industry and the relationship between theater owners and film producers. As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how this will impact the release of future Malayalam films.
